TOMAR SignalRescue™

In-Head Emergency Flash System

When the signal goes dark, SignalRescue™ takes over.

Independent emergency red flash at the signal head—deployed on its own or as an added layer alongside a battery backup system (BBS).

A BBS keeps the controller and full-color operation running while its capacity and power path remain. If power cannot reach intact equipped heads, SignalRescue™ automatically switches them to emergency red flash on local power.

Why resilience matters

Intersections lose power for more than one reason.

Storms, theft and vehicle strikes can interrupt the power path to an intersection. Independent protection at the signal head adds resilience wherever it is deployed.

EIA, 2024 data · utility customers
  • Storms and grid interruptions

Severe weather and utility events can cut power to many intersections at once.

  • Battery and cable theft

Stolen cable can interrupt the power path to signal heads. Battery theft can remove cabinet backup capacity.

  • Vehicle strikes to cabinets

A crash can destroy a signal cabinet, as in Joliet, Illinois in January 2026.

  • Extended outages and lifecycle budgets

Long events, inspection and scheduled battery replacement all shape a resilience plan.

A BBS is valuable for keeping intersections in normal operation during an outage. Installation and integration, inspection and scheduled battery replacement are real lifecycle planning considerations—especially for legacy lead-acid installations. Modern BBS alternatives are available, and costs vary by site and battery chemistry.

How it works

Standalone protection. Added resilience alongside a BBS.

SignalRescue™ monitors for an all-out condition at each equipped head and automatically provides emergency red flash on local power. Alongside a BBS, it adds a separate protection layer while the BBS supports normal controller operation.

Standalone scenario, step 1 of 4: Normal operation. Utility power reaches the heads and the controller cycles them normally. Cabinet: Utility power ON. No BBS installed. Field cable: intact. Independent emergency flash is available at intact equipped signal heads with sufficient local battery charge. Confirm the installation and operating configuration with TOMAR.
